Installing a legal research program

LOIS Pita
Network Installation
Important: When installing PITA in a server based environment, time must be synchronized between the server and the workstations. The Unlock Activation Code for each data disc (also known as a book) depends on synchronous time. If the time is not in synch then the Book can never be unlocked, the PITA program will become corrupted, and must be removed from the server and reinstalled. If necessary, time must be forced to establish synchronization. If PITA will be used on a Local Area Network (LAN) by several users, the network administrator must follow these steps:

  1. The network administrator should give Read Only rights to users in the \PITA directory.
  2. A search path should be mapped to the \PITA directory.
    1. For Novell users, the path should be set using the MAP command to set a search drive to the \PITA directory.
    2. On MS-NET based networks, such as Lantastic, both MS-DOS PATH and APPEND commands must be used to ensure proper operation.
  3. All users MUST start PITA from their home directory or any other directory that is unique to that user while running PITA.

Note: When a network user desires to transfer files using the N-Line® Service, that user must have READ\WRITE\CREATE access to the \PITA\NLINE directory. No additional setup is required for standard LOIS Professional Library® users to access and use the Advance Service books.

Server Component Installation

  1. Open the LOIS program CD
  2. Double-click on setup.exe.
  3. During the installation process, when queried about where to install the application, change the destination from the local path (C:\PITA) to a network path (F:\PITA).
  4. Follow the screen prompts to complete the installation process.

Workstation Component Installation

  1. Each workstation must have a subdirectory C:\PITATEMP for local caching use during database searches. Use the Windows Explorer to create this directory.
  2. Create a shortcut to the server installation of the program. The correct path is F:\PITA\PITA98.EXE. If the shortcut points only to the F:\PITA directory, and not the actual program PITA98.EXE, the installation will become corrupted and must be removed from the server and reinstalled.

Referencing Multiple CD Drive Bays or Network Drives

  1. Start the PITA program.
  2. Select the File menu.
  3. Select Preferences, and then the Directories option.
  4. Enter the drive letter of each CD drive or network drive mapping that will be searched for LOIS databases. The entry is not case sensitive, and a semicolon must separate each path. (i.e.; D:\;f:\;V:\)
  5. After all paths are entered, click on the Apply button.
  6. Close the window.
  7. Close PITA .
