Installing a legal research program

Shepard's Citations
Network Installation
Shepard's Citation does not have a true client/server network installation. The program must be installed locally on each workstation. Each workstation will require a drive mapping to the virtual volume of the Virtual CD/DVD Server.

  1. Open My Computer or the Windows Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the mapped network drive.
  3. Open the folder of a Shepard's disc (ex: SMHC023).
  4. Double-click on setup.exe.
  5. Follow the scren prompts to install the program.
  6. Start the Shepard's Citation program.
  7. Select the Options menu, and Config.
  8. Select the Search Drives tab.
  9. In the box next to CD-ROM Search Drives enter the letter of the mapped network drive. Do NOT place spaces or commas between the letters. Both upper and lower case letters may be used. (ex: DefGhVx)
  10. In the Share Name section, enter the network path to the destination subdirectory of a Shepard's disc (ex: V:\SMHC025).
  11. Click in the Add button.
  12. Click on the OK button.
  13. Click on the Program Reset icon. This is the third icon from the left, in the top row of the Icon Bar.

Shepards.ini
If the method for locating the network path of data CDs seems difficult, the paths can be manually entered into the C:\WINDOWS\SHEPARDS.ini file. This file contains parameters defining how the program will run. It is read as the program is started.

  1. Open the Windows Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:\WINDOWS
  3. Locate and open the shepards.ini file. If prompted use Notepad or Wordpad to open the file.
  4. Scroll down to the [DrivePaths] section.
  5. Enter the drive path, or UNC path to the data disc.
    1. If a disc with a network volume name of Smhc025 is accessible via drive mapping V:\ the path entered would be V:\smhc025
    2. If a disc with a network volume name of Smhc025 is accessible via a UNC path to a server name Cdserver1 the path entered would be \\cdserver1\smhc025
  6. Caveat Emptor: DO NOT enter more than 20 paths. Shepard's cannot recognize more than 20 CDs. If you enter over 20 paths, the Shepards's propgram will not run and must be uninstalled, then reinstalled.
  7. Save and close the file.
  8. Start the Shepard's program.

Stand-Alone PC Installation
Follow the steps listed above, accessing the setup.exe from a local CD-ROM drive.
