Virtual CD/DVD Tower

Imaging (creating) Virtual CD-ROMs
An Image Builder wizard will walk users through the process of imaging, or copying, the contents of a CD-ROM to the hard drive. To access the wizard from the main window either select Edit, and Build Image; or click on the icon with the yellow feet.

  1. The first screen welcomes you to the wizard, and lists the next 6 screen you will see. Click on Next.
  2. Use the "Selecting the Source" screen to select the physical CD that is to be copied from the drop down window.
  3. In the "Selecting the Destination Screen" enter a container file name. This name use the Windows95 naming conventions, so it may be fairly long and descriptive. For example, both "George of the Jungle" and "Fed Rep f2nd vols 146-345" are acceptable names. Also select the destination hard drive for this data. The program defaults to the internal hard drive of the PC, but this is usually not the best choice. The Virtual CD Tower hard drives have a much greater capacity in most cases.
  4. The "Selecting Image Options" screen allows you to enter a description of this Virtual disc. It is recommended that the same name that was entered in the previous screen be used.
  5. The "Managing Images" screen provides an overview of all the information collected on this particular image build process. If any mistakes are noticed, it is possible to click on the Back button to make a correction.
  6. The last screen before the copying process begins is the "Build Options" screen. Here you can delay the copy process until a later time (after work hours, for example), or assign it lower CPU priority. The copying process is slowed by about a third under Lower CPU Priority.

Managing Virtual CD-ROMs
Once a Virtual Disc has been created, an icon for it will appear in the right-side window. To "insert" a Virtual Disc into a Virtual Drive Bay simply drag the disc icon onto a drive bay letter on the left-side window and release the mouse button. Once all the discs you want to use are "inserted", exit the Virtual CD-ROM program and use the discs just as you would a physical CD-ROM. The disc will remain inserted even if you shut down your PC, just as a physical CD would.

Deleting Virtual CD-ROMs

Virtual Discs may be deleted in two different ways. In both cases, highlight the disc to be deleted in the right-side window. Then use one of the methods below to delete the CD.

  1. Select Edit, then Delete
  2. Click on the red X icon.

Confirm deletion by click on Yes when asked if the container file is also to be deleted. This is the data that makes up the Virtual disc. If No is clicked, only the icon will be removed from the screen.
